FELA (Friends of East London Aquarium)
This is a non-profit organisation that aims at raising sponsors and funding for the continual upgrading and improvement of the Aquarium.
The F.E.L.A Committee heads the “Friends of the East London Aquarium”. This committee is comprised of a Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer, and addition committee members.
Meetings are held monthly and the main objectives are that of fundraising and sponsor co-ordinating, all for the benefit of the Aquarium.
Other aims of the committee are that of coastal conservation and education, and the sharing and promoting of an interest in marine life to its members.
To join F.E.L.A. an individual, family or business is required to pay a nominal fee, allowing them free access to the Aquarium for the year, a monthly Newsletter and monthly member meetings that entertain guest speakers on relevant topics and the opportunity for members to meet with others sharing the same interests.
Over the last 12 years F.E.L.A has been the channel used by the Aquarium to approach donars and sponsors for any form of contributions that assist the Aquarium in its maintenance, operations and upgrading of facilities where municipal financial restraints cannot assist.
Projects and requests through F.E.L.A. have included items as large as the building of new exhibits, the upgrading of hallways and assistance in renovations after a fire, through to operational and conservational events such as Beach clean-ups, National Marine Week, Kiddies Holiday Programmes etc. and most recently the sponsorship of this new website by Ocean Basket.
